Blogger allows creating pages: Will it stem the migration to WordPress?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

A lot of bloggers using Blogspot will now heave a sign of relief as now they have the option of creating pages just like the way you can create pages while using WordPress.

One of the main reasons for a lot of people to use Wordpress has been the option of creating static pages. This allows the professional touch to a Wordpress blog with static pages for About Us, Contact and Terms of Services. Blogger has many 3rd party methods to create pages on a blogspot blog but none from Blogger itself.

blogspot

How to create a pages on Blogger?

  • This feature is not yet available on your blogspot url. You need to sign into its draft version. Just like Google has Labs page for showcasing and testing new features and applications, Blogspot has draft. You can sign into draft by clicking here.
  • Now that I logged into my draft blogger account, all I needed was to go to my blog’s dashboard and visit the Posting section and I saw a new tab named ‘Edit Pages‘.

blogger_create_page

  • I could create pages and also add them to either blog sidebar or to blog tabs under the header. Just create a page and you will be prompted automatically to select with the pages widget.

Blogger trying stop the migration?

I still think that Blogger is something that people love using for its simplicity. The sheer number of features do make Wordpress a little daunting for someone starting out as a blogger. But most times when a bloggers has a decent following starts to look to migrate to a Wordpress hosted blog. Even the founder of DW, Rahul Bansal first started writing on a Blogger but then moved to WordPress. He even wrote a post on how to migrate from Blogger to WordPress.

Wordpress has the ability to create pages which does make a first choice for many developers as it is not just blog oriented. Blogger with the option of creating pages will obviously make it better for blogspot fans to stay on and not migrate.

What do you think? Will Blogger give Wordpress competition in the future?

Artisteer screenshot

The above image is the screenshot of Artisteer software. It looks similar to the Microsoft word using the Artisteer software we don’t need any technical knowledge because the software is designed in such a way they any one can easily understand the function of this software.

This software contains 11 tabs. These tabs are the main working areas in the software They are Ideas, Colors & Fonts , Layout , Background, Sheet, Header, Menu, Articles, Blocks, Buttons, Footer. We will explain the functions one by one.

Ideas:

ides tab

Suggest Design: The suggest clicking on the “Suggest Design” option you will get theme suggestion that it goes on changing the themes what they have in the software. You won’t get unlimited number of themes but it can able to display some amount of themes what the software contains. In the above image you can see one theme is displaying after clicking on “Suggest theme” option the theme is changed to next theme. The Suggest Design option is used only for the purpose of the changing the theme.

Suggest Colors: The suggest color options goes on suggesting the color of the theme i.e in the first screen shot you may see the white+blue+gray color theme when you when on the suggest colors the theme color may changed to black+read+blue. When go on clicking the suggest colors may go on changing the color combination of the theme. It only changes the color combination of the theme but not theme as in Suggest Design option.

Suggest Fonts: The suggest fonts works same as suggest colors option but it changes only fonts not color.

Suggest Layout: The suggest Layout option goes on changing the layout design of the theme. For example the first image which contains the white theme with one sidebar if you click on suggest Layout property the layout of the theme is changed to some other layout i.e the sidebar may moved to left or two sidebar may comes in this way it goes on changing different property.

Suggest Background: The suggest background helps in changing the background color of the theme without making any changes in the theme it just changes only background color of the them making all the things constants.

Suggest Sheets: This works like a style sheet. It going on change some looking property.

Suggest Header: It changes the headers of the theme means it change background images of the header to another images with different sizes of images.

Suggest Menu: Changes the menu placement, structure and etc . This property deals with menu item.

Suggest Article Design: This goes on dealing with the title property, tags etc

Suggest Blocks: This changes the blocks design structure for example the sidebar blocks design pattern goes changing when you start clicking.

Suggest Buttons: If the theme contains any buttons then you can change the button appearance with the suggest button.

Suggest Footer: This property changes the footer display style.

This completes the Idea Tab. I think you will get some knowledge about Idea tab.

Colors & Fonts:

color

The above image of the colors and fonts tab. This tab gives the more option which is used in the Idea tab for more customization. You can see the same option which is available in the Idea tab but here it goes in depth option means you can find more property which is not displayed in Idea tab.

12-26-2009 3-35-42 AM

For example you can see the above image which is the property of “Color Themes” this option works same as Suggest Colors: option which is available in the Idea tab here is the we can easily choose the properties. All other option available in this tab gives more option so that we can easily customize our theme.

All the other tabs i.e layout, background etc which provide the same functions which are explained in the Idea tab but here they give more property or for every there they will displays the dropdown menu as showing in the color Themes option in the above image.

Introduction to Artisteer

Working with Artisteer

Pros:

  • Easily create themes for any blogging platform.
  • Easy to use
  • No need to have a technical knowledge
  • professional looking theme can be created
  • We can add personal images in the header what we see in most professional blogs

Cons:

  • Slow: If you click to change the theme color then you may need to wait for 5 to 8 sec of time to change
  • Cannot able to change the size of the sidebar or content area.
  • You cannot able to apply any creativity to design. All are fixed you need to work within that boundary itself.

This software is only recommended for those peoples who don’t have the knowledge of theme creation. This software is not for the people are who the some what css and html language because those peoples can create there own theme with there own creativity.

Send Your Blog Feeds To Twitter Using Feedburner

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Just a few days ago, Google announced its arrival into the rather competitive market of URL shorteners. And what better way to promote it, than by combining the popular google service-Feedburner, and twitter!

Most of the publishers earlier used twitterfeed.com for posting auto-mated RSS feeds to twitter. Over time as more and more people began to use it, I’ve found the site to be rather slow. Also many issues related to logging in to twitterfeed were also reported.

As many of the publishers already use feedburner to provide RSS feeds via e-mail, it would not only be convenient to use the all new feed to twitter service from Google, but would also give you the Google guarantee! So here’s how to do it.

Procedure:

  1. Login at the feedburner using your Google account.
  2. Select the feed that you want to publish to twitter.
  3. Click on the Publicize tab.publicize
  4. After that, click on the Socialize option, from the services menu to the left.
    socialize
  5. Now click on the Add a Twitter Account button to add a twitter account to your feedburner account.
  6. You will now be redirected to the twitter site. Login, if haven’t done so already. You will be asked to ‘Allow Google access? Click on Allow.allow
  7. Now that you have been redirected, select the twitter account you want your RSS feeds to be published to (only in case you have added multiple twitter accounts only.)
  8. You can configure the available options, to your liking and then click on the Activate button at the bottom.

That’s it. Now whenever you post an article on your blog, the moment feedburner gets updated a tweet will be sent to your twitter account.

Advantages:

  • Its a google service and integrated into the feedburner panel.
  • Faster: Unlike twitterfeed, which checked your feed only once in the previously set custom time interval, this service tweets your post as soon as the feedburner feed is updated (which is rather quick).
  • The post URL’s are shortened using google’s all new URL shortener; goo.gl.

This is how your Twitter Updates will appear

New Website Translator Widget from Google

Monday, November 30th, 2009

mnPeople from all over the world can access your site. Although most of them will be comfortable with the default language of your website, be it English or any other, its always possible that someone might want to view it in their own language. Of course they can go to the Google translate site and do the needful, but wouldn’t it be better if you provided that facility in your website itself, as a widget?

Recently Google Translate underwent a revamp, and along with it came new tools. The tool we are talking about here is the translate tool that you can embed in your website/blog. Here’s how you can add it to your blogger blog:

  1. Login to your blogger account and go to your blogs Layout >> Page Elements.1
  2. Now click on Add a Gadget.2
  3. Now select HTML/JavaScript.3
  4. In the new window that opens, enter the following code:
  5.

  6. That’s it! Click on Save and then take a look at your blog. Simple wasn’t it?
    4

To configure more options you can go to this page.

The feature that I liked the most in this widget is the live translation ie. the page does not reload while it is being translated. Pretty neat, I would say!

When the translation takes place a toolbar can also be seen at the top, which show’s more languages to which you can translate the page into as well as revert back to the original.

5

Liked it? Comment on.

How To Get Contact Form For Blogger Blog?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Contact Form is must for every blog in order to provide a platform for the users to interact with the owner of the blog. In WordPress one can use Contact Form 7 Plugin and can place them in the menu bar or can embed in the posts wherever necessary by installing this plugin, where as for blogger blogs there were no tailor made plugins to insert contact form/pages. One has to edit the Html or create their own custom code to do this.

Contact Form Techcats

Here are the best available options for a Blogger Blog to insert Contact Form:

FormSpring – Forms can be added easily by editing HTML.

Features:

  • Smart Routing
  • Spam Protection
  • Website Integration
  • Easy Form Builder
  • Custom Confirmation Emails

123 Contact Form – You can integrate the code easily by placing the link, No programming or HTML knowledge is required to use this. Adding email forms, web forms, polls and other types of html forms to your website is very easy.

Kontactr – You have to place the JavaScript into your Blogger post. It is Clean and Simple, It uses CAPTCHA Protection hence forth it is secured and it is highly customizable and the best of all is it free.

My Contact Form - Using MyContactForm is as simple as 1 2 3, After Creating the contact form, Click on “Get HTML” to get code and paste blogger post in HTML mode. That’s it you are done.

Pow Page Contact Us -You can create or place a text link either in the menu or sidebar to click on to go to form.

EmailMe Form – You’ll find a code to add a link that points to the contact form generated, or click on “Get the HTML Code” and get the code to insert directly into your site. It is secure and works with any platform.. You can use it for your Wordpress blogs too.

Add tweetmeme/ Retweet button in your blogger blog

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Recently Devilsworkshop has added a very important ‘tweetmeme’ button which you can see with every post. After using this button, I thought of installing it in my blog which is hosted on blogger.com (blogspot). Unfortunately there’s no direct widget which can be used for blogger but you can still use it in your blog, just follow the steps given below.

  1. Open your blogger dashboard.
  2. Go to ‘Layout’ >> ‘Edit Html’.
  3. Check the ‘Expand Widget Templates’
  4. Now find this html code there,

<data:post.body/>

Just after the above code and before

copy and paste,

Save Changes and see the retweet button on your blog with every post.

RT

CHANGES:

In the above code change ‘twitterusername’ in red to your twitter’s username. This change is required to use your username in every RT or Retweer else it will use @tweetmeme. in the above code the RT will be RT @twitterusername.

That’s it, now all you need to do is change the placement of the button and select which suits best to your blog.

Banned from a particular website? [Possible Solutions]

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

There are thousands of websites on the Internet that you access and you might get banned from any one of them doesn’t matter what the reason is. For example last time Google banned me from there website blogger.com due to overusing it. And it’s not just websites who might ban you, even some forums or social networking websites that requires a separate account for accessing it can do that. Now if you got banned from any website just try the steps given below,

  • RESETTING IP ADDRESS: This is one of the most effective way of removing a ban, and one of the easiest method too. To reset your IP address go to Start>>Run or simply press Windows+R. Now type cmd (that is the short form of command prompt) and hit enter. In the command prompt, type “ipconfig /release” in the command line and hit enter. This will disconnect your Internet for a while. Now again type “ipconfig /renew” and hit enter.

cmd

(NOTE: Type everything without quotes)

  • COOKIE: Clean/ delete your browser cookie. For Firefox to cleanup your cookies press Ctrl+Shift+Delete and Check the Cookies button.

Cookies

  • ACCOUNT INFORMATION: This method can be used when your particular account is suspended like on Facebook or on Orkut. In this case the server bans your E-Mail id, Name, Personal Details e.t.c. In this case you can make a different account with different information from the older ones. Just changing the E-Mail id can also sort out your problem in this case.

If your are still banned then try all of the above points simultaneously. Else contact the site administrator directly and ask the reason for banning you. :)

Blogger Implements Read More/Post Summaries (at last!)

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

bloggerlogo.jpgPost Summaries or the ‘Read More’ hack as it is most commonly known, has at last found its way into Google’s Blogger. One of the most requested features, the post summaries has has been implemented in Blogger Draft on the eve of 10th anniversary celebrations of Blogger.

What’s post summaries?
If you have just begun blogging, post summaries may be a new thing to you. Its where you show only a small part of the post on the main/archive/category page, and provide a ‘Read More’ link at the botttom. When the user clicks on this link, he can read the full post!

What are the advantages of using it?

Well, when a person need to view two pages to read a single post, it increases your page-views drastically! This feature also decreases load time of your home page. Also many blogger’s don’t prefer to overwhelm the blog’s visitors with ads on the homepage, but would like to show ads when the visitor goes to the post page. This feature allows implementation of such a system.

Until now there wasn’t any easy way to implement post summaries in Blogger. Many hacks were introduced by blogger’s all over the world, which relied either on CSS or javascript. However all of the hacks needed modification of the blog template, an idea many people weren’t much pleased about.

The 'Insert Jump Break' Button

The ‘Insert Jump Break’ Button

This feature is currently available only in Blogger Draft (http://draft.blogger.com/). The blogger team has given a short tutorial on how to use this new feature, which you may refer from here.

Share blogger posts easily with blogger’s new “Share” button

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Blogger.com, the world’s widely used blogging platform is now adding new features and improving its technology day by day so as to retain it’s position of #8 worldwide. In this course a new feature- “Share” button has been added to the “nav bar”.With the use of this button you can share a particular post or even the whole blog and post it to Twitter, Facebook or Google Reader.share

To use this feature you just have to click on the button “Share” mentioned on the “nav bar”, then select the place where you want to share the content. You can share it on Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader or even E-Mail the post but note that, E-Mail option won’t be available while sharing the whole blog.

sharepopup

This being a nice feature, few people find it useful because,

  1. These days, people hardly use “nav bar” with their blog.
2. Other sharing options are much more advanced and convenient, like Twitter feed for Twitter which automatically post content to twitter.
  3. Any content posted to twitter can be shared automatically to Facebook and Orkut. Read Update Twitter, Facebook and Orkut Status With Just One Click for more info.
  4. Lots of widgets are there which gives a single click sharing option. An example is AddThis.

But still this new feature is welcomed by thousands of bloggers who love to blog on their favourite things. They neither need good website looking blogs nor they use adsense like ads to make some money out of their blogs. ;)

How To Show Ad Based on Author in a BlogSpot Blog

Friday, August 28th, 2009

moneytravel_thumb.gifOver here at Devil’s Workshop, Rahul bro has implemented a cool revenue sharing program, wherein the advertisement that appears on the post belongs to the author itself. For eg. in this post the ad that is displayed below the post title is my ad. Any revenue generated by clicks on the above ad, is paid to my adsense account. But the thing is that with plugins like Advertising Manager, this method is easy to implement in Wordpress. On blogger its a little more extra code. See how you can implement it in Google’s BlogSpot.

Follow these steps to implement this hack in blogger:

  1. Search for the place that you are going to insert your ad in. For this tutorial I am taking the space after the post title.
  2. Find <data:post.body/>
  3. Insert the following code:

    <b:if cond=”data:post.author== “Ricky”>
    <!– Ricky’s Ad code here–>
    </b:if>

    <b:if cond=”data:post.author== “Joe”>
    <!– Joe’s Ad code here–>
    </b:if>

  4. Done!

The code is pretty self-explanatory. Suppose the authors name is Joel, replace Ricky in the first line of the code. Also don’t forget to insert the ad code in place of <!– Ricky’s Ad code here–> or the place. If you have more authors, just repeat the three lines again and again.

Whats the Advantage of such a thing?

To increase the traffic for a blog the main thing that is required is fresh content that is regularly updated. When you offer a revenue sharing program like this, people get interested quickly, because there is an incentive in it for them.

They will post regularly for you, because the more they post, the more they can earn. And due to the fresh content you get more traffic day by day. Its a win-win situation for everyone at last!

Top 5 Tips to Increase your BlogSpot Blog’s Trafic and Revenue

Friday, August 28th, 2009

bloggerlogo.jpgOK! Let me clarify right at the beginning, as the title quite clearly states, these tips are centered around blogs based on Google’s blogger.com and not ones based on the wordpress platform (although I’m planning one for it soon).

So what does it take to bring people to your blog and turn them into regular visitors? Of course content is king, but when it comes to blogger many background tips are equally important to increase views and your money!

Many of us just create blogs, with the sole intention of only creating money. That’s the greatest mistake that you can ever do! Don’t just think about earning and go about copy-pasting articles. No one wants to read articles that are copied or have no value, blog about something that you are passionate about, things that you know a thing or two about!

OK. Enough of the blabber. Lets come straight to the hacks or tips that can increase your traffic and revenue, although not overnight, but gradually! Let me tell you that some of these tips are a little advanced.

Tip 1: Remove Duplicate Meta Description Tags and page titles

You can easily add meta tags to you blog. However due to a silly and mostly overlooked mistake, these meta tags that are meant to increase your traffic, causes the downfall of your blog!

The error is that the meta tags that you insert are only meant for the homepage of your blog and not the post pages. But due to the code that we insert, all the post appears to have the same meta-tags. This causes Google to think that you have duplicate content all over your blog, and your blog gets marked down for spam.

How to rectify it?

Divya Sai @Bloggerstop.net has published a neat tutorial on how to rectify this problem. You can read it over here.

Tip 2: Submit your blog or its feed to Blog Directory And RSS Submission Sites

Whats the use of submitting your blog/feed to blog directories or RSS submission sites? Well, these sites are on the internet for quite some time. So they are well recognized by Google. When you submit your blog url to such directories and google crawls them, your blog’s preference in search results increase. These in turn results in lots of organic traffic!

To get a good many number of sites to submit your blog to, visit Robin Good’s RSSTop55:Best Blog Directory And RSS Submission Sites from here.

Tip 3: Insert an ad below your post title

You can see in this very post, that there is an ad just below the title. According to many experienced campaigners, this is one of the spaces on the blog that is most likely to be clicked on. So go on and insert one ad below the title on your blog and you can earn almost double of what you are currently earning now.

If you don’t know how to implement this tip, visit this well-documented tutorial by Mohamed Rias @techieblogger.com, click here.

Tip 4 : Contradict Others!

Well that doesn’t mean you go on saying that twitter is going to shut down in the next month! If you have a strong view about a particular topic (for eg. you think that test cricket has it, in itself to survive against T20. This is a big contradiction these days!) blog about it. People like to read posts and articles that counter others and contradict the pundits!

Let others know about your views by commenting on the article that you have contradicted against, along with the url of your article. You are bound to get many readers.

Tip 5 : Write a ‘Top 5′ article

What was the main aim of this post. To give blogger’s a list of hacks that they can implement to increase their traffic and revenue, in one place itself. If you would search the blog-sphere you would get all these tips but in various posts and blogs. Here you got all the 5 tips in 1 post, that’s what people like.

Top 5, Top 10, Top 100 lists are very attractive as well as tempting for a person. The reason being that you get many tips in one place itself. So go on and write a ‘Top n’ list on your blog.

Note: Apart from this Alok Chaudhari has given two wonderful posts on hacks that every blogger must implement. They are 5 Best Blogspot Blogger Hacks Everyone Should Use! and and Best Blogger Hacks Collection – Part 2

Hope you liked the post and do comment if you have any doubts or suggestions.

How to make Email and Yahoo Messenger Buttons for your Blog

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

contact-us“Contact Us” one of the most important part of a website or blog cuz it gives you a chance to interact with the reader of your blog, what they like and and what they want to read. But those days are gone when you give full e-mail address on your blog like “For any queries contact us at admin@example.com”. Nobody has time to copy the address, open his mailbox and go to compose mail. And even all of this is not at all required when you can do all this with just one click. Not only this you can also launch the Yahoo messenger window with a single click. All you need to know is the correct codes for both of them.

E-Mails:

mailto:admin@example.com

use your e-mail id in place of admin@example.com

Implementation:

to use it in html use

Mail the Author

If you further want to add the subject of e-mail just modify above code with,

<a href=”mailto:admin@example.com?subject=This is your subject”>Mail the Author

Change “This is your subject” to whatever you want in subject field. You don not need to add target=”_blank” mailto automatically opens in a new window.

Yahoo Messenger:

For yahoo messenger use the code

ymsgr:sendIM?singh_77s

Replace Singh_77s with your own messenger id.

Implementation:

Send us Y im

The html knowledge needed for them is just basic, the main part is the codes. If you need further assistance, ask them using the comments below.

Best Related Posts Hack for BlogSpot Bloggers Using jQuery

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Andacoolrelatedposthackforyourblog.pngIt’s been some time I have been searching for best way to put related posts on my blogger blog! I know that there are actually many hacks for this! But truly speaking, I could not find any hack to be that much efficient as that of Wordpress. Even the hack by Jackbook looks good but not professional (as it shows the label tags and does not orders them according to priority). Also the hack posted at Devils Workshop does not seem to work now (may be because blogger APIs have changed over time)… So today, I am going to share the best way I have found to show Related Posts in your Blogger blog just in the WordPress style! It loads fast and completely based on jQuery. Let’s first take a quick look at the features:

  • No need to modify the template. Just insert it as a HTML/JavaScript Widget and you are done! But we shall be working with the template XML not as Widget to host the JS codes directly on Blogger!
  • Lists top posts (you can choose the number) sorted by the number of common tags (or labels)
  • Displays loading text or icon until widget loads the related posts (Ajax style)

Before starting the Tutorial, I would like to give the full credit to the author of the JavaScript of this Hack, MoreTechTips. You can visit directly this post on his blog and implement the hack without much problem! But below I have illustrated a better way, where you will be able to make your blogger.com blog host the necessary JS files (including jQuery) and also will give you a ready made CSS to decorate your Related Posts.

Step 1: Preparing necessary files and implementing to Template XML:

Well you don’t need to do much at this step! Just some copy paste on your Blogger Template

  • Although Google hosts jQuery files very well, but it is always recommended to host them at your own! For this I have previously written a post on how to copy jQuery framework directly on Blogger. Go through the posts and when done move to the next step…
  • Now open up your Blogger Template once again by navigating to Blogger Dashboard > Layout > Edit HTML.
  • Before the closing
tag of your template, paste exactly the code on below:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    relatedPostsWidget({
       'loadingText':'<img src="http://i29.tinypic.com/11addex.gif" style="margin-bottom:-5px;"/> loading...',
       'relevantTip':'\d relevant tags!',
       'containerSelector':'div.post-body',
       'relatedTitle':'Related Posts',
       'maxPostsPerTag':10,
       'maxPosts':10
    });
    </script>
    </b:if>

You may also download it in form of a text file from here if you are having problem copying the code! Paste the code properly

  • Save the Template and view your blog! If your template is a default one or not modified much, then you should be able to see related posts below every posts on their individual pages

Understanding the code:

While pasting the code on Blogger, you may change the following values and to get the subsequent results. Note that all the codes are written in escaped character and you need to maintain the format in order to avoid any Template XML parsing error!

1. Loading String code:

'loadingText':'<img src="http://i29.tinypic.com/11addex.gif" style="margin-bottom:-5px;"/> loading...'

You may change the loading… to any string you want! Also I have included a jQuery style animated gif image! You can change the src="http://i29.tinypic.com/11addex.gif" to src="YOUR_IMAGE_URL" to put your own image

2. Tooltip Code:

'relevantTip':'\d relevant tags!'

Shows a tooltip like this. Change the relevant tags string to anything you want! Keep the /d as it is to show the number of tags

3. Container Selector:

'containerSelector':'div.post-body'

Use this to append the Related Post after the selector you have specified. The default one will make them appear below posts. If you have edited your template, then get the Id (or add it) of the div below which you want to append the Related Post widget (say the id is ‘mydiv’) and change div.post-body to div#mydiv. You can also get the class of the div and put it like div.myclass.

4. Related Widget Title:

'relatedTitle':'Related Posts'

Change the Related Posts to any text string you want to appear as title.

5. Maximum Number of posts to show:

'maxPosts':10

Change the value 10 to any number you wish to show! Note that the JS will automatically cut off the most irrelevant posts! Also if you wish to show all posts then set the value to 0.

If you want to learn more of the codes then visit original article here. Also Mike (author) has explained it in detail here! (Very useful for newbie programmer)

Step 2: Styling this up Using CSS:

Now this is my favorite! Quite easy though… Just go to the Blogger Template XML again (Blogger Dashboard > Layout > Edit HTML) and before the closing </b:skin>

}
/* Widget loading text */
#related-posts-loadingtext{

Save Template and preview! (Having problem? Download the CSS file from here) What did you see? Surprising isn’t it ;) . Basically it is done by modifying the default attributes of unordered lists using CSS with proper selectors. Previously I have written a guide on CSS for styling up bullets or unordered lists here on my blog. You can learn more from it and make your code unique ;) .

So that was the complete tutorial to integrate Related Posts in your blogger blog with advanced jQuery technique! Of course, as JS is a client side scripting language so you will not be getting SEO with this hack (Unlike WP) but this can expose more of your articles in front of your readers and thereby you can get more page hits!

If you face any problem regarding the hack, then feel free to ask here! Also do thank the original Author for this great piece of jQuery plugin!

Setup a Sub-domain of your Blogger Domain to any Free/Premium Host using NS or CName

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Domains and Domains! What about subdomains Do you have a blogger blog with your own custom domain and would like to use a particular sub-domain of it in a Free or Premium Web host? Well, unlike Wordpress, Blogger does not let us upload any files on their server! While using Wordpress (of course self hosted) we have the total freedom to add as many sub domains in the same hosting account! The reason is that we have already set the NameServer[NS] of our domain to the web-host we are using. But if we are using Blogger then we in general set up a CName of the www alias pointing to ghs.google.com and forward the root level domain (mydomain.com) on www.mydomain.com.

Now as our network grows we soon feel like having at-least a free web-hosting to upload and host some html/php/JS files of our tutorials and then comes the difficulty! Setting the NameServer of your domain to any Free web host can really be risky and a downtime from them can really pull down the reputation of your blog. So today we are going to learn how to add a specific sub-domain of your Blogger Domain into any (yes! any) Free Web hosting services without actually changing the NameServer of your root level domain. We shall see the following two cases:

  1. Using NameServer [NS] for a particular sub-domain when your domain is unlocked;
  2. Using CName for a particular sub-domain when your domain is locked;

Setting up the Sub Domain using NS for a Particular sub-domain:

Here I pre-assume that

  • You have a Blog hosted on BlogSpot and having a domain www.myblog.com. Your root level domain is forwarded to http://yourname.blogspot.com which ultimately redirects to www.myblog.com
  • Now you want to add a particular subdomain, say abc.myblog.com to a free web host!
  • Your Domain in unlocked and you are able to take total control over the DNS Management!

By default, most of the domain hosts like godaddy, name.com gives Total control over the DNS Management! Also the status of a domain is set as unlocked by default. On the following example we shall see adding a particular subdomain (ourlife.intechgrity.com) of my domain (intechgrity.com) to a Free Web hosting provider Zymic.com. As I have bought my domain from name.com so the screenshots will contain the control panel of it! You can obviously find similar thing on your godaddy control panel (if you are using it). So now lets get into the work…

Step 1: Setting up the NS for the Subdomain:

  • Just register your self at Zymic.com. Then add a Web hosting account! They may give you a particular subdomain from them as yourname.uuuq.com or yourname.vndv.com etc! We are now going to add our own subdomain on it!
  • Go to your Name.com (or godaddy) Control Panel > Select Your Domain and Click on DNS ManagementGo to the DNS management
  • Now on “Add a Record” Dropdown menu select “NS”. Just beside it on the Record Host area, type “ourlife[or what ever subdomain you want to use] and on the Record Answer Input box type the NameServer of your web-host [Check to their documentation to get to know about their NameServer].Add the NS For Zymic I was having a NS ns1.uuuq.com and ns2.uuuq.com. After adding both the NS to the same Record Host the result was looking something like this…The NS result

Step 2: Adding the Domain on your Web host:

In this step we just need to add the Domain to our web host! If you are using Web hosts like www.07x.net then you can add an “Addon Domain” from the Vista panel. For most general Control Panel, we just need to add the domain using the default option! Below is an illustration of adding the sub-domain on Zymic…

  • Go to your Zymic control panel > Login to your existing account [ie, yourname.uuuq.com] and click on “Add A Custom Domain NameAdd a custm domain on Zymic
  • Now type in the name of the sub-domain which you have created on Step 1. Basically the key thing is that we are adding the sub-domain as another Domain on Zymic!Add the domain to Zymic host
  • Once done, open up Command Prompt (Start Menu > Run > Type “cmd” and hit enter). Now on the command prompt screen type “ping your-subdomain.your-domain.com” [without the quotes]. If you have done everything correctly then you should see the following result:Ping result for NS
  • Now start uploading files to the same place as that of yourname.uuuq.com [or yourname.vndv.com or whatever] and access it from http://your-subdomain.your-domain.com

And you are done! Enjoy your own domain on a Free Web-Host! You can obviously use this trick on any Premium web host! If you are using Godaddy control panel then just add a NameServer [NS] from the Total DNS control panel. Rest all the processes are same.

Setting up the Sub Domain using CName:

Well, using NameServer is not the only way of adding sub-domains in such way! We can do this using Canonical Name or in short CName. This becomes useful if

  • Your domain is locked and you really don’t want to or don’t know how to unlock
  • Don’t feel like using a NameServer :P

So what ever the reason may be, below I have illustrated how I added my Sub-Domain itg.intechgrity.com to another popular Free Web-host – Awardspace.

Step 1: Setting up the CName for the Sub Domain:

Just create an account on awardspace and they will give you a free site like yourname.awardspace.biz or yourname. Like mine is swashata.awardspace.biz. Save the website URL in Notepad and keep it handy for future use! Now just follow the steps below:

  • Go to your Name.com [or Godaddy] Control panel > DNS Management [Just as illustrated before]
  • This time we shall add a CName instead of a NS in the same way. Fill in the form in the way shown exactly on the image!Adding the CName on DNS Panel You have to enter the URL of your website. [For my case it is swashata.awardspace.biz] and save the settings
  • Now we need to check whether the CName is set properly or not! Open up Command prompt [Start Menu > Run > Type “cmd” and hit enter] and type “ping your-subdomain.your-domain.com”. If you have done everything correctly then the result should be similar to this [Note the difference b/w the two ping results. Here although we ping itg.intechgrity.com the result shows swashata.awardspace.biz. This the function of a CName] Ping result on CName

Now that you are done creating the CName lets add your sub-domain to your hosting account.

Step 2: Adding the domain on your Web Host:

Pretty much easy. Only a few important steps to follow and a few points to remember:

  • Simply go to your Awardspace account and Under Website Manager, click on Domain Manager. Go to the Domain Manager on awardspace
  • Now just enter the subdomain whose CName record you have created before. [Don’t include www; It should be only itg.intechgrity.com (say) not www.itg.intechgrity.com].
  • Just add the domain and you are done!
  • Start Uploading the files to the your-subdomain.yourdomain.com folder [Not the yourname.awardspace.com folder]

And you are done! Enjoy your Free host on your domain ;) .

If you are using Godaddy then you can easily add a CName from the Total DNS Control area! As I don’t have a Godaddy domain so I cant put the screenshots. But you should be able to find it easily! Also check the FAQs and Documentation of the web-hosts you are using to get detailed help on the NameServer you should use and the folder where you should upload your site. Also you may use FileZilla Client for uploading files using FTP. Also check the documentation of your Web hosts to find the username, server and password of your FTP account!

Note that using NameServer for your different Sub-Domain is always recommended and preferred over using CName. Some Free hosts like Zymic will not even add a domain if it is a CName. So you should check whether your Web-Host supports it or not! My recommendation is to use different NS for different Sub-Domain! BTW, I hope after reading the CName way, you should now be able to understand how the CName ghs.google.com works ;)

Well, that was a detailed tutorial on using Subdomains of your Blogger domain [Now, I have already explained why in WP we don’t need to take such pain] to any Free/Premium web hosts! I hope you have found it useful! If I have missed any point or if you have some query then feel free to ask us!
